Big Cup Kendama Trick
In this video I’m going to teach you how to catch the tama on the big cup and it looks like this. Now in this video I’m going to give you a number of tips that are going to apply to learning just about any kendama tricks, so you are going to want to make sure to get them down.

In this video we are going to learn the big cup and you are going to want to start by learning in the Sara Grip. If you don’t what that is watch our other video on How to Hold the Kendama. For now, get the Sara Grip, have the big cup pointing upward and you are going to catch the tama on the big cup first by bending your knees and getting down nice and low and using your knees to pull the tama up. When it gets up in the air you are going to catch it on the big cup and use your knees to cushion the tama so that it doesn’t fall off.

Now when you’re first learning this trick you might be tempted to use your wrist, your arm to just pill it up and you really don’t want to do that because it makes the trick harder than it has to be. You want to make sure to use your knees and this is true for almost all kendama tricks and the reason why is using your knees limits the movement to just up and down instead of to the side or all these angles that your wrist and arm can get. Just going up and down using your knees, lift up, cushion.

The other things you are going to notice is that when I’m catching the tama the first thing I’m doing is only pulling the tama up to about the level of my ken. I’m not pulling it up high and I’m also trying to catch the tama as it is coming and just as it reaches its highest point and starts to come down I’m putting the big cup under and then catching it. The reason you do this is because that’s when the tama is moving at the slowest and that makes it easier to catch.

Once you’ve got that down you’re going to want to change things up and practice this trick in the Ken Grip. And all the same principles apply except you’re in the Ken Grip. Lift up, catch. The reason you want to do that is because there are a number of tricks that use the big cup in both the Sara and the Ken Grips, so you want to make sure to master both of them.

And that is how you catch the tama on the Big Cup!
