Learn how to do the Overhand Whip with an Offstring Yoyo (4A)

Basic Overhand Whip – Offstring (4A) Yoyo Trick
In this video I am going to teach you your basic Overhand Whip with your Offstring Yoyo (4A). It looks like this. Just like that.

This trick can be pretty challenging to learn at first, so I am going to try to give you as many tips as I can that will help you get it just right. The first thing that you will notice is that we are using a pretty wide, a pretty large, offstring yoyo. That is partly to help make tricks like this easier to learn.

The first that you want to make sure when you are learning this is make sure that you are holding the string properly in your hand. I just pinch the string between my thumb and my first finger, and then let my yoyo string go off the other part of my hand.

You can see that this just makes your whip. And when you whip the yoyo you are going to whip it with the part of the string that is more towards the center of your body. In this case it is on the left of my hand because I am right handed.

When you do your whip, the first thing that you are going to want to do is actually toss the yoyo up. As I am holding it right you you can see that I am going to whip it with my right hand, so instead of having it centered on myself, I actually want to toss it off a little bit to the right, so that when I do my whip it is in the most natural position for me to catch it.

You can try, as you do your motion and you get used to it, you can find out what is comfortable. And then you can try to toss the yoyo up so that it is right there.

A second thing that will make this a lot easier to learn is to realize that you are not really aiming the string so much as your hand, in particular where your thumb is grabbing the string right here. That’s what you have control of. What you want to do when you are whipping it is make sure that part of your thumb is getting very close to the yoyo as you whip it. The closer it is the more likely you are going to be able to catch it. Also, you are going to try to get your thumb lined up right with the groove of the yoyo right here. If you do that, then you are going to be successful.

Another thing that I do, is I tend to think of the string as being an extension of my arm. Sometimes I visualize that my arm is a sword and the string is the end of the sword and I am hacking right through the center of the yoyo. That helps me keep everything straight.

Once you have everything properly worked out in your mind you can practice it as much as you want. You will be amazed how often you miss, even if the yoyo is just standing still, so don’t be ashamed to just work on it like that. Eventually you will get used to the whip motion and then you will be ready to do it with it up in the air.

All you are doing from here is just putting into practice everything you have been working on. Toss the yoyo up, just visualize that sword if that helps, make sure you are getting your thumb close to the center of the yoyo.

The only thing that I can say is to keep working on it; don’t give up. It is such a great trick, and once you get used to it you will find that it is really something you can do over and over again. It really can be perfected. You just have to put in the time.

That is the basic whip.
