With the Flipside yoyo Duncan has done something very very right. They have made one yoyo that can use two different sized bearings. The smaller (size A) bearing is perfect for responsive play, while the larger (size C) bearing is ideal for unresponsive play. This gives the Flipside yoyo an edge that no other yoyo has. This is because small bearings are better for responsive play, and large bearings are better for unresponsive play. By offering both options in one yoyo, Duncan has made the Flipside one of the most versatile yoyos on the market today, great for any player interested in learning string tricks at any level. (Check out this video if you are not sure what responsive and unresponsive yoyoing is.) The Flipside yoyo performs great. Out of the box the Flipside comes with a large concave size C bearing that plays incredibly smooth on the string and can handle even the most intricate tricks. The weight and shape of the yoyo give it a zippy stability that makes is super fun to throw. When you swap out the large bearing for the smaller size A bearing the yoyo becomes semi-responsive and should return to your hand without a bind as long as it has enough spin and you give a good tug. (Some Flipside yoyos remain unresponsive even with the small bearing until lube is applied.) To make the yoyo fully and consistently responsive, a few drops of lube on the small bearing and on the spacers will do the trick. Because of its versatility we feel the Flipside is one of the best starter yoyos on the market today. We have had so much fun playing with the Flipside we cannot wait to get this yoyo into our customer’s hands. This is definitely one of the most exciting yoyos to come out of Duncan in a long time. Please note: to keep the Flipside working properly we highly recommend that you consider getting lube for your bearings. We recommend thick lube for the smaller bearing to keep it responsive, and thin lube for the large bearing to keep it from wearing out. (While other yoyos with bearings only require one type of lube, the Filpside’s unique ability to use 2 different sized bearings requires a different lube for each bearing in order to get the full range of play out of your Flipside yoyo. If thin lube is used on the small bearing instead of the thick lube we recommend, it will make it unresponsive, even though the small bearing is designed for responsive play. It started off like any other day. I was in my favorite coffee shop on the corner of NE 60th and Glisan, sitting at the bar, looking out the large West-facing window distracted by the noise of traffic that sauntered through the door, intermittent, as patrons came and went. As usual, I sat in anticipation, dulled by my morning lethargy, as the owner of Seven Virtues Coffee prepared my latte. “In a glass” I said as he looked my way, indicating my intent to linger. I accepted the expertly prepared cup of double-shot-caffeinated-delight and foamed milk with a barely discernable nod, a feat of sincere enthusiasm given the early morning hour. I had already begun to mentally prepare myself for immersion in my daily task when I heard the music. In retrospect it most likely came from a vehicle waiting to make a left turn at the light, but at the time I could swear that it emanated from his very person. He entered the door with such rhythm in his swagger it did not surprise me in the least to hear one of my fellow patrons whisper in genuine awe, “groovy”. His psychedelic ensamble of polyester and spandex was matched perfectly by his blue-tinted glasses, his dome of curly hair, and salmon colored yoyo in constant motion, accented with caps of baby blue – a Duncan Flipside I would later discover. Unaware of myself, overcome by the power of his presence, my head began to bob to the music. To say he walked to the counter would be a mistake. This man did not walk. He glided to the register with a movement between a bobbing crane and a swaying cobra. No time to talk. He reached into his pocket for a few bills to hand the attendant who had already punched in his order, his Flipside yoyo in constant motion. Nothing could keep in step with this man like this toy. It had the rhythm, conducted from his fingers through the string like righteous electricity. The attendant handed him back a gold $1 coin – the only one in the register as far as I could tell – which he proceeded to flip into the air, landing in the center of the tip jar with the sound of a muffled cymbal. Even the coin kept perfect time. The music changed and his movements slowed. I think it was the bridge. I could feel the subtle undertones begin to build as the owner prepared his customer’s melodic brew while the man inched ever closer to the counter’s end. The music stopped. The yoyo stopped. I held my breath. The man reached out his hand. No sooner had he accepted his drink than the rhythm began again, in the full force of a climactic radical overture. The serpent possessed my neck as my head was released from its morning languor to move and sway with the rhythmic joy effusing from this man. The only words I heard him speak he spoke to me, as he walked passed towards the door. “I’ll catch you on the flip side.” The bell rang as he passed through the door.
