Getting back to the buyer’s guide. As in previous buyer’s guides we are only going to include yoyos in this list that we actually sell. And that’s because we only sell yoyos that we love. It kind of makes, we are not going to include a yoyo in the list that we don’t love, and hence, don’t sell.

Also in this list we are not going to be recommending any limited run yoyos, because we want to make sure that the yoyos we recommend in this list are actually available if you would like to get them. Besides that we are really only going to be talking about 1A style yoyos. And 1A style yo-yoing is the most conventional of yo-yoing where you just have one yoyo attached to one hand. There are actually 4 other styles of yoyos, and we have a separate buyer’s guide that makes recommendations in those styles if you want to check that out. If you are looking for the most up to date recommendations for any style, you can always go to yoyotricks.com/bestyoyos and if we have made any updates to our buyer’s guides before we have had a chance to make a new video you can always check there, and that will be our most current list.

You might also be a new player and say, I don’t really want to look through a whole list. Can’t you just tell me the one thing to get? Ok. I’ll just tell you three things, but this will make sense.

The first thing you want to get if you are a new player is the First 50 Yoyo Tricks Pack, and that is because when you learn to yoyo you want to go through the First 50 Yoyo Tricks list first because that is going to introduce you to yo-yoing in the best way. The pack is designed to go along with the list in such a way that you won’t need to worry about anything, you can just get working on your skills.

Now you might be thinking, you know all the 5 styles look kinda cool, I want to try all of them. Is there anything for me. There is, we have a 5 styles yoyo pack, this pack includes the first yoyo we recommend for getting into each of the different styles so that you can try them all out and figure out which style you like the best. Or you can just learn tricks in all the different styles.

If you would like to learn how to yoyo with a friend or family member, you could always get two of the First 50 Yoyo Tricks pack, and that would be great, but we did just launch this new program called the Screen Time Yoyo Challenge. A lot of us feel like we are spending too much time in front of our screens. Our thinking is, if you learn how to yoyo then instead of going in your pocket to get your phone when you’re bored, you can pull out a yoyo and do something more in the real world. The Screen Time Yoyo Challenge Pack includes two of our top beginner yoyo, and if you go to yoyotricks.com/screentime we’ve go all new tutorials that we filmed with this yoyo. It is one whole cohesive unit that all works together to make it really easy and fun to learn. If you are a parent we do think that this is a great way to help reduce overall screen time in your kids, by giving them a new hobby.

Here’s the thing. If you are a kid, let me tell you. If you want to go to your parents and say, “hey, I saw this guy on youtube, he is wearing this red shirt, now I want to learn how to yoyo.” That may or may not work. But, if you go to your parents and say, “hey, I think I’ve been spending a little bit too much time on my screen, and I’ve been thinking if you’ve wanted to learn how to yoyo with me not only would it be fun but I’d have something else to do besides look at my screen all day.” That is a whole lot more likely to work, and you will have a whole lot of fun with your parents. It is just a really good option, trust me.

Now before we actually get to the recommendations, there is one more thing that we need to talk about, and that is yoyo maintenance. I know that doesn’t sound like a whole lot of fun, but as all good yoyoers know, “a happy yoyo, makes a happy yoyoer.”

When you buy a yoyo you are actually getting three things, well technically there are four things, but we will come to that last one at the end. What you are buying is a yoyo body, a yoyo bearing, and a yoyo string.

If you think about the yoyo bearing, it is just like any other bearing, if it is not properly lubricated it is going to wear out pretty quickly. Here’s the thing, there are actually different types of yoyo bearings, and there’s two different types of yoyo lube and it is not always obvious which lube goes with which bearing. We make it really easy for you, we just tell you which lube goes with which bearing in each yoyo. If you go to the Yoyo Recommendations section for each yoyo in our store we are going to tell you the type of lube that you want to get for that bearing.

When it comes to yoyo strings you might not think about this, but it is actually kind of obvious.
Strings can wear out, and sometimes they break. What you want to is just get extra replacement strings. In the same section of our store, under yoyo recommendations, you can see the type of string that we recommend for that product specifically.

If that all still seems a little bit too complicated, just scroll up in the recommendations section a little bit. We always recommend a yoyo pack for each yoyo that includes the right type of lube and the right type of strings for that yoyo.

There is also the yoyo body that you are getting. These don’t really require maintenance, just general care. Just make sure you are not constantly over-tightening the yoyo or you might strip the threads on the inside of the yoyo. Make sure you are not slamming it against concrete. If you don’t do those two things, your yoyo body should last a pretty long time.

The last thing that I have not mentioned yet are yoyo response pads. They are these little silicone o-rings on the inside of most yoyos that allow them to come back. These don’t wear out as often as strings do, so we don’t include them in the pack by default, but you can add them on to the pack. If you look in the same Yoyo Recommendations section we tell you what type of pad we recommend most for that particular yoyo, then you will be on your way.

Alright, on to the recommendations. Now if you have never yo-yoed before, or if you are looking for a yoyo for someone who has never yo-yoed before, you are immediately faced with two options: do you want to get a beginner yoyo, or a starter yoyo? Both are suitable for people who have never yo-yoed before, but there is a key difference. Beginner yoyos typically have an extra feature that make them particularly easy to use, while Starter Yoyos lack that feature, that doesn’t mean that they are not easy to use, but it also means that they are particularly good for the more advanced tricks as well. Beginner yoyos kind of limit you just a little bit, by making tricks easier, they also keep you from doing some of the more advanced tricks. You are going to have to weight that in the balance and decide what you are looking for.

When you are ready to decide, if you go with a beginner yoyo, the one that we recommend is the Fizz. Over the years we have taught a lot of people how to yoyo in person, and we have tried a lot of different yoyos because we want people to have success very quickly, because that makes yo-yoing more fun. With other yoyos we have never seen the same kind success that we do when we teach them using the Fizz. You may be wondering, “Why is that?” Actually, there are a few reasons. Let me show you why.

The first thing you will notice is that the Fizz comes apart. This is really great if you want to get knots out from your string. That alone makes it, it is a huge advantage. The next thing you will see is that has this ball bearing in there. That allows the Fizz to sleep 3-4 times longer than yoyos without ball bearings, which is going to be most of the yoyos that you are going to find in stores, if not all of them. The last thing that makes the Fizz pretty unique. It has these little teeth on the inside of the yoyo. I don’t know if you can see that, but these teeth are flexible and they bend in on the yoyo. What that does is when you pull the yoyo up, those teeth are pretty aggressive, they grab the string make it come up really easily. But, when the yoyo is spinning they get pushed into the yoyo just a little bit, which allows it to sleep longer. If you have a long spinning yoyo, that also comes back really easily, that is exactly what you are looking for in a good beginner model.

When it comes to learning tricks, as we said, the Fizz is really good at learning the basics. That is because even if your throw isn’t very good the Fizz can still sleep long enough that you can do your tricks and get the yoyo back. That will will make the beginning learning of yo-yoing, a whole lot more fun. When you start to get into more advanced tricks the Fizz does play pretty well on the string. String tricks are the main trick that you learn with a 1a style yoyo. The Fizz has one more advantage up its sleep, and that is that you can also learn the basics of the second style of yoyoing, or 2A, and that is because the Fizz can loop pretty good as well. All the other starter yoyos are specialized to just one style, but the Fizz can teach you the basics of two, so it really makes it a perfect beginner yoyo if you want to try out yoyoing.

If you think you are ready to get into starter yoyos, as we mentioned, the main difference between beginner yoyos and starter yoyos is that starter yoyos are also good for the most advanced tricks. In order to understand why, you need to learn just a little something about modern yoyoing. Most people when they think of yoyoing, what they are thinking of is you throw the yoyo down, when you pull the yoyo up it comes back. In modern yo-yoing the most advanced tricks are actually done with a yoyo that does not come back up when you pull on it. You think this might be kind of a real hassle, but it actually opens up a huge variety of tricks so that the majority of tricks that are done are actually done with these advanced or unresponsive yoyos. The really cool thing about starter yoyos, is that they can play both ways. The starter yoyo that we recommend most is the Sage.

We have been recommending the Sage for a long time, and we’ve even made some improvements to the Sage over time to make sure that it works as well as it can for new players, but it is really the general design of the Sage that makes it so great as a starter yoyo. If you think about how you might make a starter yoyo your first question might be, “How can I make a yoyo that is as good as possible for new players?” With the Sage we went the opposite direction, we looked around and thought, “What are the best yoyos out there for the most competitive play, and can we take those designs and make them work for a new player?” That is where the Sage came from. We took some of the most competitive designs, we made it super durable, made it a little bit less expensive so that it was easy to get into it. It really came together into a real masterpiece.

If you look at the Sage you can see that this angle cuts right down into the groove of the yoyo, that is because most of the tricks that you learn with this style of yoyo involve you catching the yoyo on the string in all these different ways. Even though the yoyo is playing responsive and comes back really easily, you can see you can do all kinds of different tricks where you land the yoyo on and off the string, and it just plays really, really well.

The cool thing about the Sage is that it is really, really easy to transition into an unresponsive yoyo as well. All you need to do is take the yoyo apart and put in a different bearing, and now you are into unresponsive play. When you are ready to learn the bind, which is the trick you need to learn to make an unresponsive yoyo come back, just swap out the bearing and you have the same yoyo, you have the same feel that you are already used to, and you are now into the more advanced style of play. The great thing is that it is just as easy to transition right back if you want to get back into responsive play. All you need to do is swap that bearing.

What we did with the Sage, since you need two different bearings, you can also imagine that you need two different lubes for the bearings, thick lube for the thinner bearing, and thin lube for the wider bearing, so we created the Sage Yoyo Starter Pack. The pack includes both bearings, the slim one that comes in the yoyo, as well as the wider yoyo for unresponsive play, it includes both kinds of lube as well as the strings that we recommend using for the Sage. We thought of everything so that you can get started off right.

The Sage is not the only starter yoyo that we recommend in our store. If you go into our shop, check out our starter yoyos you will see our recommended starter yoyo for every single style of yo-yoing, as well as several for just 1A. If you want to look at those, one in particular that I would also like to point out is the First Base. If you are looking around online a lot of players are going to recommend the First Base as a good place to start your yoyo journey. So you might want to check that one out as well.

You may be thinking, “Hey, you know I kind of just want to skip the whole responsive thing and just get right into unresponsive play. Learn the bind first and just take off.” You can definitely do that. You may be wondering, “Do you have any recommendations of just straight unresponsive plastic yoyos you can get?” I do, I actually have two, and they are both really great. The first is the Replay Pro, and the second is the Wedge. Both of these yoyos are the signature model of world champions, so it is going to be kind of tough to decide which one you want to get, but I think I can help you out.

First off, with the Replay Pro, Gentry Stein really showed the capabilities of this yoyo when he won the US National Championship with this yoyo. Never before or since has someone won a competition of this level in the modern era with a yoyo this inexpensive. He really showed what it is capable of, it is a great video, you really should check it out.

On the other hand, World Champion Evan Nagao did come and filmed a series of tutorials with the Wedge. There were some pretty awesome tricks, so again you might want to check those out and see which yoyo has the capabilities you are looking for. On the other hand, the Wedge as you may notice, does have this nice finger spin dimple on the inside. It is probably the easiest yoyo we have ever used for learning how to finger spin. So if you want a yoyo to learn that trick, definitely go with the Wedge. But the Replay Pro is a little bit less expensive so if you need to save some money you might want to go that way. You know what, it is really hard to decide, maybe you should just get both. Actually, either one I am sure you are really really gonna love, they are both excellent yoyos. The Replay Pro and the Wedge.
Eventually, as you get better and better, you are going to want to upgrade to a metal yoyo. It can be kind of tricky to pick your first metal yoyo because they come in so many different shapes, colors, and sizes. I am going to make a few recommendations to you depending on the type of yoyo you are looking for, so that you can make sure to find a yoyo you really love.

One of the first questions I usually get asked, “What yoyo is the biggest bang for my buck, where can I get starter?” Duncan just came out with a new yoyo we are super excited to recommend in this category, and it is called the Road Runner. The first thing you will notice about the Road Runner is that it is a lower price than other yoyos that are comparable from other US companies, and that is really nice. We feel like they didn’t cut any corners with this yoyo. Especially if this is your first metal yoyo there are a lot of features that make this yoyo great. The first thing is that it has what yoyoers call an “H” shape. And H shaped yoyos have two qualities that make them really great. The first one is that H shaped yoyos have a lot of power. As you are doing your tricks it just spins really long even if you are kind of messing up your tricks a little bit. It will just power through those mistakes. The other thing is it has a lot of stability, which is similar, it just means that if the string is pushing into the side of the yoyo it does not lean quite as quickly as other yoyos do. If you are working on tricks you definitely want that. All around it is an excellent yoyo. We were kind of stunned at the lower price, so we feel like this is an excellent option, especially if it is your first metal yoyo.

Sometimes you are just looking for something a little bit smaller, a little bit onocuous while you are out on the town, something you can fit in your pocket that you can still use to do all your tricks. We have a category on our store called pocket yoyos. This last year was kind of a renesiannce of pocket yoyos. A lot of great models came out. Certainly our favorite of the bunch is the Recess Snack.

Besides being delicious, the Snack has found the perfect balance between playability and size. It is small enough to fit in your pocket and you will not be bothered by it throughout the day, but when you bring it out to use it you are going to be surprised because it kind of plays like a full sized metal yoyo. That really impressed us because a lot of smaller yoyos, either they are so thick and dense that they feel like a brick on the end of the string, or they are really light which makes them fun to play with, but you don’t feel like you can push the yoyo to the limit and work on your more difficult tricks. That is why we really like the Snack, because you won’t feel like you are compromising on your trick by bringing around a smaller yoyo. We really feel like a lot of players are going to take this yoyo, it is going to sit right next to the door so when they head out they can grab it and they will always have a yoyo with them wherever they go.

Another question people always ask us is, is there just one yoyo I can get to practice all 5 different styles? Unfortunately for 2A and for 4A, those styles are so different that you will need yoyos that are specialized for those styles. For the other 3 you can get just one model that works pretty good for all three. If we had to make just one recommendation, it would definitely be the Canon.

The Canon was designed by world champion Jake Elliott especially for 5A. As he was designing the yoyo he started to notice that the qualities that make a great 3A yoyo overlap pretty heavily with the same qualities that make a great 5A yoyo, as long as you make the right design decisions. He consulted with 3A national and world champions to make sure that he got it just right, and the Canon was born. The thing is, you can’t have a yoyo that is great for 3A and 5A without it also being great for 1A, so this yoyo is just perfect for the full spectrum of tricks across all 3 styles. It also gives the Road Runner a run for its money as far as the biggest bang for your buck, because it comes with the Ultraweight included, which is the machined Delrin counterweight that Jake used to win the world yoyo championship. All around this is an excellent option.

A lot of times when people ask us “What is the Best Yoyo?”, what they really mean is, “What is the best metal yoyo I can get for 1A specifically?” This is always a really tough call, but this year we had to give it to the Shutter Wide Angle. When we first started buyer’s guide the Shutter yoyo was the yoyo we picked for our top pick for metal yoyos. It actually caused us to create a whole new category on our website called “Legendary Yoyos”. That is because the Shutter was going to keep winning that top spot, and we wanted to highlight other yoyos. Since then we have added a few more yoyos to the Legendary category, because these are yoyos that are so good they outclass everything else in that category, so if you are really into yo-yoing these are definitely yoyos we recommend.

Now with the Shutter Wide Angle we have been able to keep a lot of the benefits we loved about the Shutter, but also add something new. Like the original Shutter this yoyo also has inner foil design which does put some of the weight more towards the center of the yoyo. Which is something that very few yoyos still do today, even though it worked so well with the Shutter, which does help the Shutter Wide Angle stand apart. What that does in terms of play is as the yoyo is moving outward and away from you, typically during your hop elements, it helps it stay on plane so that you can have a lot more confidence as the yoyo moves through space.

The biggest difference between the original Shutter and the Shutter Wide Angle is, of course, the Wide Angle is wider, and this has two significant advantages. The first one, if you are working on a lot of tricks where you either have to whip the string into the groove of the yoyo, or if you are doing a lot of different hops and movements where the yoyo is very far away from you and you have to land it on the string in a risky way, obviously the width is going to make those tricks a lot easier to master. But if you have ever seen our video about how to choose a yoyo for Horizontal Play, one of the things we talked about, one of the bigger take-aways, is that wider yoyos are just better for horizontal tricks. That is definitely true of the Shutter Wide Angle.

We feel like if you take all of these things together, kind of that feeling of confidence you get because the yoyo stays on plane as it moves through space, with the ability to do riskier elements and more difficult horizontal play, we feel like the Shutter Wide Angle is just a great option whether you are a beginner or just really getting your footing in tricks, or whether you are a more advanced player. It really hits all the right marks, and we are excited to recommend it.

You may be wondering if there is anything out there that is better than a metal yoyo, and in fact there is, they are called bi-metal yoyos. What bi-metals do, they combine two different types of metals into one design to be able to focus the weight in one location to achieve superior performance than you could with a single metal in your yoyo. In the case of this yoyo, most of the body is made out of aluminum, but these rims are made out of stainless steel, which is more dense, which means you can put more weight focused on the outer rim of the yoyo, which achieves more powerful spins. If you are thinking about bi-metal yoyos and which one is the best, the choice this year is really obvious, it is the Edge Beyond.

The Edge Beyond is one of the most extreme designs in yoyo that we have ever seen, but at first when you look at it, you might think, that looks kind of bland. That is part of the magic of this yoyo. If you were to feel how thick the aluminum is, where there is aluminum on the yoyo, every where where there is aluminum, it is as thin as it can possibly be. The whole point of that was to put as much weight in the rims in the stainless steel as possible, so that you have a very extreme weight distribution. So much weight is on the rim of these yoyos, it spins so powerfully, it is so stable, maybe the most stable yoyo we have ever sold, and when you look at Evan Nagao win the world yoyo contest with this yoyo, you can see it is capable of the most out of control, crazy, extreme tricks, and that is just what the Edge Beyond so special.

It is a premium, it comes with a custom bearing, so no other yoyo in the world has this same bearing. Everything has come together to make this exactly what Evan was looking for. That also comes with a premium price. If you are kind of looking at the price of this yoyo thinking, that might be a little bit more than I want to spend, we do have some other recommendations. The first one comes in at less than half the price. It has been making a lot of waves in the yoyo world this year. It is called the Marco.

If you are familiar with our legendary yoyos of course you have seen the Horizon yoyo, and we also have a lot of great tutorials that Paul Kerbel taught with that yoyo, that yoyo is a legend in its own right. If you look at the inner cup of the Marco, you will see that it is identical to the Horizon, and that is because the Marco is a reimagining of the Horizon done as a bi-metal yoyo. Whereas the Shutter Wide Angle was a very small departure from the Shutter, there are a lot of big changes that they made to this yoyo. Most notably, the width. You can see it is quite a bit wider when laid side by side with the Horizon, that does help with Horizontal style play, and also doing your big extreme tricks.

It is also a bi-metal yoyo. I think part of the reason why they did that, the Horizon did have a very powerful spin because of its large diameter. While pushing the yoyo to make it wider, they had to redistribute some of the weight. To keep as much on the outside edge as possible, they did make it a bi-metal yoyo. In general it gives a very light feeling, which is really nice. You can really get this yoyo moving fast, but it is really big and wide so that it is good for your more extreme tricks as well. There is no reason to wonder why so many players are drawn to this yoyo this year. We think it will be an important yoyo for years to come as well.

The last bi-metal yoyo that we want to recommend is kind of taking things in a different direction from the Edge Beyond and the Marco, and that is the Ethos.

When we designed the Ethos we decided that we wanted to change things a little bit from the normal bi-metal designs. One thing that we did is we backed off the stainless steel rims from the very edge of the yoyo. We put them just a tiny bit more on the inside. That was to expose the aluminum around the edge of the yoyo and the reason we did that is for grinds. We wanted to make sure that this yoyo was great for all the different kinds of grind tricks that you can do. We have a nice finger spin dimple that you can lock into, so you can do your more advanced finger spin tricks. The reason this edge is exposed is so that you can also do your horizontal palm grinds really well. Talon Grinds and finger grinds work great as well. Again, compared to the Marco and the Edge Beyond, those yoyos are both extremely wide. This is a more conventional width, and we actually shrunk the diameter a little bit. By doing that we reduced the overall weight of the aluminum to give more weight that we could put into the stainless steel rims, so we actually have a lot of weight in those rims. You get a very, very powerful spin, even though the yoyo is small. Where we feel like the first two yoyos we recommended are great for competitors, we feel like the Ethos is the yoyo for everyone. If you just love doing tricks. You just want to be able to do all kinds of tricks, but you also want the advantages of a bi-metal, then the Ethos is definitely the way to go.

You may be wondering, is there something out there even better than bi-metals, and we think arguably there is, and it is not tri-metals, it is actually plastic metal yoyo hybrids. The new way that they have been making these yoyos is pretty amazing, so I want to tell you a little bit about how they are made first, and then I will tell you the yoyos we really like the best.

The first thing that you need to know is that these are actually machined on the same machines that make the metal yoyos that we have already talked about. That means that they can be held to nearly the same tolerances, and play just as smooth and great as metal yoyos, but the plastic that is used is quite a bit less dense than the aluminum in metal yoyos, which means that you can do more interesting thing with the design and still have a ton of weight left over to put into the stainless steel rim on the edge of the yoyo, so that the yoyos can play super powerfully, but you have got some more extreme things that you can do with the shape.

There are two that I mentioned that we really love. One of them is the iCEBURG, the other one is the iPPON. Both are made by iYoYo, and we kind of like to call them the fraternal twins of yoyo design, because we like both of them so much, we just can’t decide which one we love better.

One of the coolest things that you will notice about both of these is that they do have a finger spin dimple on the inside, and both of them are very, very easy to make finger spin, and because they are made out of plastic, they do not use up so much of the weight as they are creating the design to draw your finger into the center of the yoyo, certainly not nearly as much as you would need to use if you were using aluminum in its place, so it leaves so much weight left over that goes into these metal rims, that the yoyos both have a really, really powerful spin but they also both play really light and fast.

The question is, how do you choose between them? If you want a yoyo that plays just a little bit more stable, a little bit more powerful in its spin, maybe you can do slightly longer tricks, then you go for the iCEBURG. If you want a yoyo that is just a tiny bit wider, plays horizontal just a little bit better, just plays a little bit faster, go with the iPPON. If you want a yoyo where you are sure you know how to pronounce the name, go with the iCEBURG. If you want one that everybody is going to tell you it’s pronounced differently, go with the iPPON. You just have to decide which one you like better. If you just want to do it on aesthetics, both of them look really cool. These are gorgeous yoyo, they play unbelievably good. We have been surprised by these ever since they came out. You certainly can’t go wrong with them. Again the iCEBURG, and the… well whatever you want to call it by iYoYo.

So those are our recommendations for this year’s buyer’s guide. Remember if you want to see our recommendations for all 5 styles, just go to yoyotricks.com/bestyoyos and check those out. Remember, if it is later in the year we may have updated some of our recommendations, so you can see all of our latest recommendations there. Again, if you are learning how to yoyo, make sure you log into our level up system where you can track your progress and discover new tricks as you go. Speaking of being on the go, make sure you download our app for apple or android device and… if you have made it this far in the video, thank you so much for watching, we really appreciate your support.

We’ll see you next time.
